Democratic Women Are Best Positioned to Win Amid Republicans’ Failure on the Economy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic women are best positioned to succeed with voters in the environment of increasing financial hardship nationwide. Recent polling from Impact Research on behalf of EMILYs List Action shows that most Americans, but particularly women, are struggling financially in their daily lives and feel bleak about their financial futures.
As we approach critical 2025 and 2026 elections, voters blame Republicans for the poor economy and are expressing a strong desire for leaders who connect with their financial hardships and will fight to improve their circumstances.

Democratic women are putting forward bold policies that meet voters squarely in their pain and frustration and offer a pathway to a more affordable future. Their agendas are rooted in their lived experiences as mothers, caretakers, and years of fighting to improve life in their communities.
- Mikie Sherrill, candidate for New Jersey governor, is running on an Affordability Agenda focused on lowering everyday costs like housing, utility bills, and groceries, and building opportunity for New Jerseyans by providing tax relief and making life easier for families with children. She has also introduced a “Save You Time & Money” agenda to streamline the state government with fewer delays and fewer costs for New Jersey residents and businesses.
- Abigail Spanberger, candidate for Virginia governor, proposed an Affordable Virginia Plan that will save Virginians money by lowering energy costs and making health care coverage more affordable, put homeownership within reach for all Virginians, and make it easier for hardworking families to get ahead.
- Deb Haaland, candidate for New Mexico governor, is focusing her campaign on making life more affordable for New Mexicans. She went on a Lift Up New Mexico tour, traveling to all 33 counties in the state to speak with residents about their financial concerns and share her plans to address New Mexico’s housing shortage and make health care more affordable and accessible.
- Gov. Kathy Hochul, running for reelection in New York, is fighting against the cost of living issues facing New Yorkers. She released a 2025 affordability agenda focused on expanding opportunity and improving quality of life for her constituents, including expanding New York’s child tax credit and offering tax cuts for working families.
- Gov. Katie Hobbs, running for reelection in Arizona, is sharply focused on addressing economic uncertainty for Arizonans by allocating funds to support first-time homebuyers, expanding child care access, and making prescription drugs more affordable.
- Rep. Nellie Pou, running for reelection in New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District as one of just 13 Democrats who won a Trump-carried House district, is fighting to improve the most pressing affordability issues facing her constituents — increasing costs of living, job insecurity, a lack of affordable housing, and the looming cuts to health care coverage.
- Carol Obando-Derstine, candidate for Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, is prioritizing solutions like clean energy tax credits that will lower costs for families and businesses, create jobs, and make progress to decarbonize the state’s energy grid.
- JoAnna Mendoza, candidate for Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, is running on practical, unifying solutions like clean energy tax credits that underlie thousands of jobs and affordable household utility bills for Arizona families.
- Rebecca Cooke, candidate for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, is centering the fallout of increasing prices for Wisconsinites like herself, a waitress and small business owner, and her plans to address them through corporate accountability, tax cuts for farmers, and more affordable health care.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Over 40 years, EMILYs List has raised nearly $950 million to help Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the most impactful independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 192 women to the House, 29 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,600 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
