Democratic Women Are at the Center of Building Power in Virginia
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, Virginia voters elected Democratic women in the primary elections up and down the ballot. The top of the ticket will include Democratic nominees: Abigail Spanberger for governor and Ghazala Hashmi for lieutenant governor, as well as EMILYs List women running in eight top flip seats to expand the House of Delegates majority. Women continue to win tough races across the battlefield, and once elected, they consistently deliver for their constituents.
EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Women are going to be at the center of taking back power, and that starts in Virginia. At EMILYs List, we’ve long known that backing women candidates is a strong electoral strategy, and Virginia’s primary elections are further proof of that. While Republicans in Washington advance a reckless agenda that is hurting people across the state, Virginia voters are looking for leaders who are ready to go toe-to-toe with the Trump administration and stand up for Virginia families. With extensive track records taking on tough fights and delivering for Virginia families, Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, and the eight women running to expand the House of Delegates majority are those leaders.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Over 40 years, EMILYs List has raised nearly $950 million to help Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the most impactful independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 192 women to the House, 29 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,600 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
