At Women’s Convention, EMILYs List Announces That 20,000+ Women Are Ready To Run For Office
October 28, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Today at the Women's Convention in Detroit, EMILY's List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced that over 20,000 women have reached out to the organization since Election Day about running for office. An additional 8,000 people have signed up to help a woman run. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
“This is unprecedented. Women continue stepping up and demanding to be at the decision-making table – here in Michigan and in every other state across the country. This is a surge of grassroots energy unlike anything we've ever seen. We've spent more than 30 years preparing for this kind of moment, and we're ready to channel this energy into wins for women up and down the ballot, not just in 2018 but for the years and generations to come.”
“I'm so excited to be speaking at the Women's Convention and hearing from some of our greatest champions – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Rep. Debbie Dingell, Rep. Brenda Lawrence, and Rep. Maxine Waters. I want every woman who's ever wondered whether she can really make a difference to know that she's not alone. They are part of a wave of now more than 20,000 women getting ready to run and change the face of politics. We at EMILY's List and our community of over five million members have your back.”
EMILY's List's largest-ever national recruitment program, Run to Win, is focused on training, recruiting, and identifying opportunities for pro-choice Democratic women to run and win in state and local offices across the country. The campaign will train, politically advise, and assess candidates up and down the ballot. EMILY's List will not only help countless Democratic women run for office – they will help them win. EMILY's List will be offering a candidate training at the Women's Convention on the afternoon of Oct. 28.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to help more women run and win at the local, state, and national levels.
