WASHINGTON, D.C. — With a record number of women running for office this year at all levels of government, Stephanie Schriock, president of  EMILYs List, will appear at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on September 18 to review the field of pro-choice Democratic women candidates on the ballot across the country this fall and explain why she believes this new wave of women has the power to shift the balance of power in Washington.

Founded in 1985 by Ellen Malcolm, EMILYs List is an American political action committee (PAC) that aims to help elect more pro-choice Democratic women candidates to national, state and local office. The “EMILY” in EMILYs List is an acronym for “Early Money Is Like Yeast” – a reference to a tried-and-true motto of Malcolm’s: that gathering lots of donations early in a race is essential to attracting subsequent donors and “makes the dough rise” when the campaign trail heats up.

Stephanie Schriock became president of EMILYs List in 2010, and is leading the organization through a period of unprecedented growth and expansion. According to the EMILYs List website, more than half of the $500 million that the organization has raised to support women candidates since its founding in 1985 was raised under Stephanie’s leadership. EMILYs List now boasts a membership of over five million people, and over 40,000 women have signed up for the organization’s “Run to Win” program since the 2016 election. Schriock came to EMILYs List with decades of experience on the campaign trail – she served as National Finance Director of Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign, and managed the political campaigns of Senator Jon Tester in 2006, and Senator Al Franken in 2008.

Lunch will be served in the club’s Ballroom at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for National Press Club members (members may purchase two tickets at this rate) and $39 for all other non-member tickets.

For all ticketing-related questions, please email reservations@press.org. Tickets must be paid for at the time of purchase. To submit a question for the speaker in advance, put EMILY in the subject line and email to headliners@press.org. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
