EMILYs List Statement on Wisconsin Supreme Court Blocking State’s 1849 Abortion Ban
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down the state’s 1849 abortion ban in a 4-3 ruling. EMILYs List endorsed and helped elect Justice Susan Crawford in April of this year and Justice Janet Protasiewicz in 2023, flipping the court and then protecting the progressive majority. Today, the majority stopped this archaic ban on abortion care in its tracks. Because of this ruling, Wisconsinites can continue to access abortion care in their state. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Electing women is how we protect reproductive freedom in this country. This is a perfect example: Women remain at the heart of the fight for our fundamental rights. Republicans will continue trying to use courts to enact abortion bans against the will of the American people — and fair, impartial Justices like Susan Crawford and Janet Protasiewicz are often our final line of defense against them.
“What’s at stake for women’s lives in this country has never been higher. EMILYs List knows best: It’s women who will lead the way in stopping these draconian attacks in their tracks and taking back power from extremist Republicans.”
