EMILYs List Endorses Elissa Slotkin for Congress in Michigan’s 8th District
November 29, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Elissa Slotkin for Congress in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Elissa Slotkin has devoted her life to public service. Following the attacks on September 11th, she chose to pursue a career in intelligence, serving three tours in Iraq. Over the course of her more than a decade in national security, Elissa served in a variety of senior leadership roles, including as acting assistant secretary of defense in the Pentagon. She has spent her career protecting the Unites States and proves every day that she knows how to get things done. Now she's running for office because Michigan families need that type of smart, pragmatic leadership in Washington.
“Elissa is taking on Congressman Mike Bishop, who has repeatedly shown that he is more concerned with supporting Donald Trump and Paul Ryan than doing what's best for his district. He voted to kick millions of people off their health insurance, played a leading role in the Republican tax bill that will raise taxes on working families, and has repeatedly attacked Planned Parenthood funding and equal pay protections for women. The families of the Eighth District deserve better, which is why EMILY's List is proud to endorse Elissa.”
Elissa, a third-generation Michigander, grew up in a meat-packing family, who taught her the importance of hard work. In Congress, she will bring her straightforward, commonsense approach to Congress tackling the toughest problems facing hardworking families. She will fight tirelessly to expand economic opportunity for all Michiganders and to help create good-paying jobs. Elissa is a powerful advocate for expanding access to health care and pushing back on predatory drug pricing. When elected she will fight back against Republicans’ attempts to undo the progress we’ve worked so hard to make will champion policies that help move Michigan forward for all working families.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
