EMILYs List Announces Top 2018 State-Level Targets
September 14, 2017
Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, expanded its Republican opposition program, “On Notice,” to include strategic state targets for the 2018 election cycle. These governors, legislative chambers, and statewide officials have consistently pushed appallingly anti-woman, anti-family, and anti-civil rights agendas. EMILYs List is focused on making significant gains at the state level by electing progressive Democratic women to replace them.
With nearly 18,000 women reaching out to EMILYs List wanting to run for office, the organization has tripled the size of its state and local campaign staff in order to provide candidates with the resources they need to run and win.
This 2018 launch of the state-level “On Notice” program is the largest ever in the organization’s 32-year history. It follows the announcement of EMILYs List’s top congressional and Senate targets in July. A full list of state-level Republican targets can be found here.
EMILYs List Executive Director Emily Cain released the following statement:
“Women candidates and women voters are stepping up at historic levels and will change the tide in states across the country this election cycle. Voters know that women and families deserve better from their state elected officials than these legislators and officials, who have sought to drastically limit–and in some cases outright ban–reproductive health options, end critical workplace protections, and roll back voting rights.
“Thankfully, across the country, we have seen women candidates and their supporters stand up and hold Republicans accountable. We are putting these governors, legislators, and statewide elected officials ‘On Notice’ for their abhorrent records and out-of-touch values. The EMILYs List community is watching, and we will make major changes in 2018.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to help more women run at the local, state, and national levels.
