EMILYs List Congratulates Rep. Emilia Sykes on Her Reelection to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Rep. Emilia Sykes on reelection to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Rep. Emilia Sykes on her reelection to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. Rep. Sykes has been a tireless advocate for abortion access since her time in the Ohio state House, and is a fighter for Ohio’s working families. We are excited to watch her continue her work for justice and equity in the halls of Congress, and fight to secure our fundamental freedoms.”
In 2020, EMILYs List awarded her the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, in recognition of extraordinary women serving in state or local office. EMILYs List has supported Sykes since 2020. This cycle, Women Vote, EMILYs List’s independent expenditure arm, invested more than $125,000 in television ads in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District to help reelect Rep. Sykes.
Rep. Emilia Sykes grew up in Akron, Ohio on the city’s west side, where she saw the hardworking families of Northeast Ohio work hard but miss out on the level playing field they deserved. Dedicated to public service, Sykes graduated from Kent State University and the University of Florida with a J.D. and certificate in family law and a master’s degree in public health. She was elected to represent Ohio’s 34th House District in 2014, where she was Ohio’s first Black woman lawmaker under 30. Soon after, she was elected minority leader. Since her election in 2022, Sykes has fought for mental health awareness, organized labor, affordable education, and reproductive freedom, and has secured over $100 million of federal funding for her district.
The EMILYs List community also contributed nearly $445,000 to Emilia Sykes this cycle.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
