EMILYs List Congratulates Rep. Lauren Underwood on Reelection to Illinois’ 14th Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Rep. Lauren Underwood on her reelection to Illinois’ 14th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Rep. Underwood on her reelection. As the youngest Black woman to ever serve in the House of Representatives, a registered nurse, and a public health expert, her voice is vital in the fight for reproductive rights and health care equity. Her reelection reflects Illinoisians’ trust in her as a tireless advocate and changemaker, whose values and experience are needed in Congress more than ever.”
Since 2018, Rep. Lauren Underwood has represented Illinois’ 14th Congressional District, making history as the first person of color, the first woman, and the first millennial to represent her district. Her career exemplifies public service, from her time as a registered nurse to her role as a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama. Underwood’s nursing background has fueled her commitment to expanding access to high-quality health care, and has informed her legislative work. She co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus to tackle the significant disparities faced by Black mothers and has championed legislation to make health care more affordable. Underwood serves on the House Committee on Appropriations, and is the senior member on the Agriculture and Homeland Security subcommittees. She is proud to have grown up in Naperville, Illinois, where she currently resides.
Underwood was first endorsed by EMILYs List in 2018, and has been endorsed for re-election in each election since.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
