It’s Official: AHCA Would Decimate 23 Million Americans’ Health Care Coverage
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its analysis of President Donald Trump and House Republicans’ American Health Care Act (AHCA). In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:
“Today, the CBO confirmed what millions of Americans have known for months: that the Republicans’ health care bill is a dangerous, deeply unpopular, and haphazardly-written piece of legislation. Donald Trump promised that he would help hard-working American families – a promise he has broken time and again. This is no exception. Trump’s signature legislative effort would strip away health insurance from 23 million Americans and deny families access to even the most essential health services by severely cutting Medicaid, defunding Planned Parenthood, and allowing states to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions – including survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.”
“Trump and his Republican allies like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have placed millions of Americans’ health care at risk to fill the pockets of powerful special interests. EMILYs List women are ready to hold Republicans accountable on the streets, at town halls, and at the ballot box. Republicans who voted for this bill should be very worried about their chances in 2018.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
