EMILYs List Statement on the Clear Differences on Reproductive Freedom Highlighted in the VP Debate

October 1, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight’s VP debate offered a clear contrast between JD Vance and Tim Walz, and the two parties’ tickets, on the issue of reproductive freedom. JD Vance misled Americans with false claims to hide his true intentions. Vance’s deception aims to distract voters from his real agenda — a dangerous platform that undermines the fundamental freedoms and well-being of Americans. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response:

“In a debate filled with Republican lies, JD Vance’s lies on abortion were particularly outrageous and dangerous. While Vance spun a tale of Republicans trying to help children and families, he lied about the impact of the Trump abortion bans across the country, breezed past the efforts by Republican legislators with more draconian policies in many states, and lied about his own record of support for a national abortion ban. Since he joined the Republican ticket, Vance has been nothing but dismissive of women and of the reproductive health care crisis Trump and Republicans created. A vote for Donald Trump and JD Vance is a vote for the extreme and dangerous Project 2025 agenda, including a national abortion ban. We stand with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz, because, as Tim Walz said tonight, we trust women. In November, abortion is on the ballot and we will not go back.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
