EMILYs List Statement on the Congressional Budget Office’s Report on the AHCA
WASHINGTON, D.C. Today the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released their analysis of President Donald Trump and House Republicans’ American Health Care Act (AHCA). In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:
“This bill is a disaster – and this report confirms it. No matter how the White House or Republicans try to spin it, the truth is that tens of millions of people will lose their health insurance under this bill – and that’s just the beginning. This dangerous legislation would also cripple families’ economic security by drastically increasing the costs of premiums, gut Medicare, giving tax breaks to insurance company executives, and defunding Planned Parenthood. Republicans shouldn’t be surprised that Americans everywhere are speaking up at town halls, protesting in the streets, and calling their members of Congress. Make no mistake – President Trump and his Republican allies in Congress will be held accountable for pushing an agenda that prioritizes benefits for the wealthy over saving lives.”
“EMILYs List women in Congress will keep fighting against a Republican Party determined to restrict Americans’ access to affordable health care, and we will continue our work to send even more pro-choice Democratic women to join them.”
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
