EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler Declares “The Time is Now” at the DNC

August 21, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, in remarks on the main stage at the Democratic National Convention, EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler highlighted what is at stake in the 2024 elections, and how Democrats will continue to win on reproductive freedom. The full remarks are below:

“Donald Trump took away our rights. But he can never take away our power. Republican attacks on abortion didn’t begin with the end of Roe. And they didn’t end there, either.

Millions of women across this country are living with the devastating consequences of Republican abortion bans. Now comes Project 2025: a blueprint for banning abortion in all 50 states. It would give extremists like Donald Trump and JD Vance the power to monitor your pregnancy, and even prosecute doctors for mailing abortion medication.

Make no mistake: The threat of Project 2025 is very real. But so is our ability to stop it. In 2022, Democrats didn’t just run on reproductive freedom. We won on reproductive freedom.

And in 2024, we’re coming back to the polls to finish the job.

In his devastating opinion, Justice Alito wrote that ‘women are not without electoral or political power.’ And Donald Trump and Republicans are about to find out just how true that is.

The opportunity is before us. The power is in our hands. And the time is now.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
