EMILYs List Endorses Judge Christine Weems for the Texas State Supreme Court

July 23, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Judge Christine Weems for the Texas state Supreme Court. State Supreme Courts play a critical role in protecting our reproductive freedom, especially with the increasing number of strict abortion bans in states across the country. State Supreme Court justices are pivotal in deciding whether abortion bans can be implemented. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“Texans are experiencing one of the most severe total bans in the nation. It is critical that we elect justices who will restore and protect our fundamental freedoms. Judge Christine Weems has a long history of representing people who have experienced injustice, and she is the best candidate to beat incumbent Justice John Devine, an anti-abortion extremist, who is habitually absent on the bench. Electing pro-choice supreme court justices can help secure reproductive rights in the state, and EMILYs List is thrilled to stand with Judge Weems in this important election.”

Judge Christine Weems is currently the sitting judge of the 281st Civil Judicial District Court of Harris County Texas and is double board certified trial attorney in both personal injury trial law and civil trial law. Weems, the child of Vietnamese immigrants, witnessed her parents achieve the American dream after fleeing their home country and building a successful life for their three children. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and was a participant in the undergraduate mock trial program, representing UT at the regional level and advancing to nationals. Weems received her Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law, where she was instrumental in building the mock trial program that was consistently ranked in the top ten in advocacy in the country. Later, she became an adjunct professor at St. John’s University School of Law teaching trial advocacy to the next generation of lawyers. Weems was named director of the National Mock Trial program at the University of Houston Law Center and serves as an adjunct professor teaching trial advocacy and voir dire. She has successfully represented injured plaintiffs in cases for medical malpractice, automobile accidents, and mass tort litigation. Her favorable results earned her a board certification by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law and, in 2023, she was recognized as the Outstanding Mentor by the Asian Pacific Interest Section of the State Bar of Texas. Weems is licensed to practice in the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas, as well as state courts in Texas and California and before the United States Supreme Court.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
