FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Lindsay Powell on her election to Pennsylvania’s 21st House District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Tonight, EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Lindsay Powell on her victory and the voters of Pennsylvania’s 21st House District for selecting a legislator who will uphold the district’s strong tradition of pro-choice leadership and protect the Democratic majority. We have full faith that Powell will take the dedication to freedom and equality she has exhibited throughout her entire career to the state House and ensure that residents of North Pittsburgh have a representative they can count on to fight for their rights.”
Lindsay Powell is a former local and federal government staffer and the director of workforce strategies for Innovate PGH, which focuses on creating employment opportunities for underrepresented technologists in Pittsburgh. Previously, she worked for the city of Pittsburgh as the assistant chief of staff, where she oversaw the first citywide digital equity initiative, helped to expand the free summer meal program during the COVID-19 pandemic, and worked to revitalize city streets. She also worked on the federal level for U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. If elected, Powell would be the first Black woman to represent House District 21. She has been a strong supporter of reproductive rights in her community and lives in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
