EMILYs List Statement on House Republicans Passing Anti-Abortion Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives continued their effort to end abortion rights with the passage of anti-choice legislation, including a bill that politicizes abortion, further restricts care, and criminalizes doctors, and a resolution on violence at anti-abortion centers that ignores threats to abortion providers and patients. In response, EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“House Republicans have not missed a beat in reminding us that they are out of step with the American people. Their first order of business after barely electing a House speaker is attacking abortion rights and further restricting access to care. At the ballot box in November, voters made it clear that they believe the right to make your own health care decisions lies with us, not with the government. Yet again today, Republicans showed that they won’t stop until they pass a federal abortion ban and decimate access across the country.

“As Republicans attack our rights, we are thankful for the fierce Democratic pro-choice leaders in the House and Senate who are fighting to protect these fundamental freedoms. At EMILYs List, we know just how important pro-choice majorities are for protecting our reproductive rights, which is why we are focused on electing more Democratic pro-choice women who stand with the American people and will defend access.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
