EMILYs List Congratulates Karen Bass for Winning her Campaign for Los Angeles Mayor
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Karen Bass on winning her campaign for Los Angeles mayor. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Karen Bass has made history becoming Los Angeles’s first elected woman mayor – a first that has been far overdue in the city of Los Angeles. As a champion for equality and reproductive rights, we are proud to stand by such a powerful leader and are excited to see all she will accomplish as she continues to fight for Angelenos.”
Karen Bass and her three brothers were born and raised in Los Angeles. As a child, Bass watched the civil rights movement unfold on television, which sparked her interest in community activism and justice. As an adult, Bass worked as a nurse, physician assistant, and clinical instructor at USC. She later founded Community Coalition — an organization that empowers Black and Latino communities to address substance abuse, poverty, and crime — and the National Foster Youth Institute, which advocates for foster youth. Bass was elected to represent Los Angeles in the California State Assembly in 2004, and she went on to serve as the first Black speaker of the Assembly. In 2010, Bass was elected to Congress for the first time, where she represents Los Angeles.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
