EMILYs List Statement on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Confirmation Hearings

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear testimony from Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and consider her nomination to replace Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler offered the following statement on Judge Jackson’s historic nomination and impressive qualifications: 
 
“One of today’s brightest legal minds, there is no question that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is qualified to sit on the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson has been confirmed by bipartisan Senate vote three times and holds a wealth of experience from her time as a federal appellate judge, a federal district court judge, a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, an attorney in private practice, and as a federal public defender. Judge Jackson’s journey to this point strengthens her nomination and speaks highly of her ability to create a lasting legacy on the Court. 
 
As she embarks on her fourth confirmation hearing today, I am inspired by Judge Jackson’s storied career and historic gains. She is the first Black woman ever nominated, and would be the first public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. Making history is rarely easy, but we hope her confirmation will reflect the reverence she is owed. ”
