EMILYs List Congratulates Yvonne Spicer on Advancing to the General Election in Framingham Mayoral Race
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Yvonne Spicer on advancing to the general election in the race for mayor of Framingham, MA. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled that Yvonne Spicer will proceed to the general election in her race for reelection as mayor of Framingham, MA. Since her groundbreaking election in 2017, Yvonne has led the city of Framingham through unprecedented challenges. A leader on science and economics, Yvonne has been integral to a multifaceted COVID-19 response. We know that reelecting Yvonne as mayor is key to the city’s continued progress. EMILYs List is proud to support Yvonne as she proceeds to the November general election.”
A Framingham resident since 1985, Yvonne Spicer grew up in Brooklyn, New York. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Technology and a master’s in Technology Education, she began a teaching career in Framingham. She later served as the vice president for advocacy and educational partnerships at the Boston Museum of Science. Yvonne has also been a committee member of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable and an Advisory Board member of the Massachusetts state treasurer’s Economic Empowerment Trust Fund. Before running for mayor, Yvonne was a Framingham Town Meeting member representing Precinct 6 and serving on the Ways and Means Committee. In 2017, she was elected the first mayor of Framingham and made history as the first popularly elected African American woman mayor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 158 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
