EMILYs List Endorses Mary Peltola for Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Representative-elect Mary Peltola for reelection to represent Alaska in the U.S. House of Representatives. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Mary Peltola’s groundbreaking victory over anti-choice extremists in her special election is proof that the movement for reproductive freedom is inspiring voters in every part of this country. Alaskans deserve a representative in Congress who will always vote to protect those freedoms, and EMILYs List knows that Peltola is that champion. We are proud to stand by her campaign as she seeks reelection, and we look forward to sending her back to Congress in November.”
Rep. Mary Peltola is a Yup’ik woman and former state legislator who was born and raised in rural Alaska, the place where she has chosen to raise her own family. She grew up fishing commercially with her father and went on to work as a herring and salmon technician for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game while in college. Peltola began her distinguished career in public service at the age of 24 when she was first elected to the Alaska House of Representatives. She served in the state House for a decade, from 1999 to 2009, championing economic opportunity for all Alaskans. She is poised to make history as the first Alaskan Native and first woman elected to represent Alaska in Congress after winning the special election for Alaska’s At-Large Congressional District this year. She will now serve the remainder of the current term in Congress and is running to continue giving Alaskans a powerful voice in Congress in the upcoming full term.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
