EMILY's List Celebrates Potential First Majority-Women New York City Council

With the results from the Democratic primary, the New York City Council is poised to be majority-women for the first time. Emily Cain, executive director of EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, released the following statement:

“We are thrilled to see that the New York City Council could be majority-women for the first time in history. More equal gender representation means greater attention to issues that most acutely impact women and families, including reproductive justice, access to affordable child care, and health care. With these strong, diverse women leaders at the helm, we know that New York City is on its way to becoming a more equitable city for all its citizens. When women run, they win, and when women win, they make progress. At EMILYs List, we will continue recruiting and empowering women to win elections up and down the ballot nationwide.”

Six EMILYs List-endorsed candidates won their races to be the Democratic nominee for their City Council districts: Carlina Rivera (District 02), Althea Stevens (District 16), Adrienne Adams (District 28), Selvena Brooks-Powers (District 31), Jennifer Gutiérrez (District 34), and Farah Louis (District 45).

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
