EMILYs List Congratulates Assemblywoman Annette Quijano on her Primary Election Victory
Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated New Jersey Assemblywoman Annette Quijano on her primary election victory. Emily Cain, executive director of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Assemblywoman Annette Quijano has been a longtime advocate for New Jersey residents, with a track record of championing legislation that protects LGBTQ+ rights, improves gun safety, extends paid family leave, and puts the people of New Jersey first. After making history in 2008 as the first woman and first person of color assembly member to represent her district, Annette has sponsored hundreds of bills designed to create a prosperous and safe community for working-class families. The EMILYs List community is thrilled to congratulate Annette in this primary election victory and to continue supporting her campaign for reelection.”
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano has represented New Jersey’s 20th Legislative District since 2008 when she became the first woman and first person of color elected to the position. Currently, Annette serves as majority conference leader and a member of the Commerce and Economic Development Committee, Consumer Affairs Committee, and the Education Committee. She is also a member of the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus and the New Jersey Legislative Disability Caucus. From 2018 to 2020, Annette served as chairwoman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, where she oversaw the passage of landmark legislation such as extending the statute of limitations for sexual abuse cases, improving gun safety, and advancing LGBTQ+ rights. In that session, Annette sponsored or cosponsored 133 bills that became law, including legislation to allow striking workers to receive unemployment benefits, expand paid family leave, and prevent and punish wage theft.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
