EMILYs List Endorses Lorie Honor for Staten Island Borough President
Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Lorie Honor for Staten Island borough president. Emily Cain, executive director of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to endorse Lorie Honor for Staten Island borough president. A co-founder of one of the largest organizations focused on women’s issues in Staten Island, Lorie has served as an advocate for people whose voices often go ignored. From owning a small business to serving as an educator for 25 years, Lorie’s deep roots in her community have earned her the necessary skills to lead as the Staten Island borough president. A dedicated activist for women’s reproductive freedom, immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and more, we are confident that Lorie will lead with compassion and ensure that all Staten Island residents feel protected and empowered.”
Lorie Honor is a lifelong Staten Islander, small business owner, community organizer, and retired teacher. Since 2016, Lorie has taken on community organizing, co-founding Staten Island Women Who March and working alongside grassroots organizations in Brooklyn and Staten Island on mission-driven activism around progressive issues. In 2019, Lorie served as outreach coordinator for Virginia Ratify ERA, helping elect equality-supporting candidates that created a Democratic majority in the Virginia General Assembly and led Virginia to become the 38th and final state needed to ratify the ERA. Lorie also served as the chief of staff for VoteEqualityUS, a national organization in the ERA movement, where she implemented outreach and GOTV operations leading up to the November 2020 United States Senate elections in Georgia, Iowa, and Montana. Throughout her 25 years as an educator, Lorie was acknowledged by the UFT and by private grantors as being an exceptional teacher.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
