EMILY's List Recognizes LGBTQ+ Pride Month
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“This month, we honor the hard-won advancements and countless contributions that the LGBTQ+ community has made throughout our nation’s history. From ensuring marriage equality for all, to ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ to continuing the fight to end discrimination against all LGBTQ+ Americans, there is so much progress to celebrate and yet so much we must continue to commit ourselves to fighting for.
Sadly, amid the successes and fights for equality from the LGBTQ+ community, the Trump-Pence administration continues its widespread attacks. From aiming to block workplace protections for transgender Americans to pushing dangerous “religious exemptions” that allow for discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in employment, housing, health care, and public accommodations, Donald Trump and his Republican allies have consistently worked to undermine the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans and ignored national crises like the epidemic of violence against transgender women of color.”
“EMILYs List is proud to be an ally of the LGBTQ+ community as we fight to ensure their diverse perspectives are reflected at all levels of office. We are thrilled to support many LGBTQ+ champions including Governor Kate Brown (OR) and Attorney General Maura Healey (MA); Senators Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ); Congresswomen Angie Craig (MN-02) and Sharice Davids (KS-03); state Rep. Brianna Titone (CO-HD27), Assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes (CA-AD60), Del. Danica Roem (VA-HD13); and Mayor Jane Castor (Tampa), to name a few. We look forward to electing many more LGBTQ+ candidates including Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23), Sarah McBride (DE-SD01), Kristen Browde (NY-AD93), and Carrie Hamblen (NM-SD38) this November who will work toward a future of justice, equality, and inclusion.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices.
