EMILYs List Statement on Virginia’s Resolution to Ratify the Equal Rights Amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C — Today, a Virginia House of Delegates committee voted to approve a resolution ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, putting the measure one step closer to becoming the next amendment to the U.S. Constitution. With a Senate committee having previously passed a similar resolution, they will now move to a full vote on the House and Senate floors. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has released the following statement:
“From the moment races were called in November, EMILYs List knew the historic number of women serving in Virginia’s legislature would lead the Commonwealth and country forward on issues of equality and democracy. We’re proud that the pro-choice Democratic women serving in Richmond — led by the first woman speaker of the House Del. Eileen Filler-Corn — have made women’s equality one of their primary goals this session, more than 100 years after women first fought for their freedoms and rights in our country. With Democrats now leading both chambers of the Assembly, we’re thrilled by the prospect of Virginia becoming the 38th state to pass the ERA and we can’t wait to watch women continue leading the charge.
