EMILYs List Congratulates Regina Romero on Victory in the Tucson Mayoral Race
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated 2018 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award nominee Regina Romero on being elected mayor of Tucson, Arizona. Mayor-elect Romero is the first woman and the first Latina to be elected mayor of Tucson. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Regina Romero on her historic victory. She is an incredible and inspirational leader and we are thrilled to watch her continue serving the people of Tucson. During her 12 years on the Tucson City Council, Regina boldly fought to expand economic opportunity through job creation, champion equal pay, combat the climate change crisis, and promote environmental sustainability in Tucson. EMILYs List is confident that as mayor, Regina will continue her impressive career as a champion for Tucson’s working families.”
A current city council member, Regina Romero has represented the people of Ward 1 since 2007 when she became the first Latina elected to the Tucson City Council. During her time in office, Regina pushed for citywide revitalization through her economic recovery plan to bring high-wage, long-term jobs to Tucson. Regina also led the effort to pass paid sick leave for Tucson working families and helped develop the city’s response to the ongoing climate crisis. Regina is a proud first-generation American and lives in Tucson with her husband Ruben and their two children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
