EMILYs List Congratulates Women Leaders on Advancing to the General Election for Seattle City Council

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Councilmembers Debora Juarez and Lisa Herbold on advancing to the general election for Seattle City Council. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Congratulations to Councilmembers Debora Juarez and Lisa Herbold on advancing to the Seattle City Council general election. Since taking office in 2015, they have fought hard for the people of Seattle by working to secure access to affordable housing, protect marginalized communities, and improve accessibility and public safety throughout the city. EMILYs List is proud to support these women for re-election this November, as they continue to champion policies that benefit Seattle women and working families.”

Debora Juarez was elected to the Seattle City Council in 2015 when she became the first Native American person elected to the Council. Since taking office, she has led the effort to secure funding for a new Lake City Community Center, worked to improve accessibility throughout District 5, and has been an outspoken advocate for the city’s Native American population. Prior to joining the City Council, she worked as a public defender for indigent communities, served as a King County Superior Court Judge, as Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Indian Affairs, and created a premier Tribal Practice Group at one of the Pacific Northwest’s top law firms. She is a member of the Blackfeet Nation and the daughter to a Native American mother and a first-generation Mexican-American father. 

Lisa Herbold was elected to the Seattle City Council in 2015. A long-time Seattle resident, Lisa has a deep understanding of the challenges facing working families in her community and has been a strong advocate for improving public life for all residents. Since taking office, she has been an innovative problem solver for tough public policy issues including access to affordable housing, paid sick leave, government accountability, and criminal justice reform. Prior to her election, Councilmember Herbold worked as a legislative aide in City Hall and was an outspoken community advocate who served on several local boards including the Young Adult Independent Living Project, Homestead Community Land Trust, and the Tenants Union.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates.
