EMILYs List Endorses Theresa Greenfield for U.S. Senate in Iowa
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Theresa Greenfield for the U.S. Senate in Iowa. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Theresa Greenfield’s strong work ethic and grit will make her an excellent senator for Iowans. She knows firsthand how important benefits like Social Security and affordable health care are for expanding economic opportunities for working families because she’s made use of them herself. Working families in Iowa can count on Theresa to protect access to these programs and work to expand them to help even more Americans.
“Senator Joni Ernst has shown her true colors by steadfastly supporting a special interest agenda that’s harmful to Iowa. While much of the attention has been focused on the state’s presidential primary, this Senate race is critically important to the people of Iowa. EMILYs List is proud to support Theresa and we look forward to doing everything we can to turn this seat blue in 2020.”
Theresa Greenfield was raised on a farm where she and her four siblings would do tasks that were essential to keeping the farm running smoothly, such as baling hay, driving tractors, and feeding animals. Financial aid and multiple part-time jobs enabled Theresa to attend college, studying at Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa State University before ultimately graduating from Minnesota State University. Theresa worked in communities as an urban planner before taking on leadership roles in real estate development companies, including one she now leads as president. Theresa and her husband Steve live in Des Moines and have four grown children, including a son who serves in the U.S. Army.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
