EMILYs List Congratulates Katie Porter on Her Victory in California’s 45th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated EMILYs List candidate Katie Porter on being elected to represent California’s 45th Congressional District in the U.S. House. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List can’t wait to welcome Katie Porter to Congress, our first non-incumbent House endorsement of this cycle. She was instrumental in managing an historic mortgage settlement, distributing billions for California homeowners. She has consistently proven that she’s not afraid of a tough fight. With Katie in office, Orange County working families will have a representative who will fight for them instead of moving in lockstep with the far-right’s agenda. Katie made history by flipping this seat and becoming the first Democratic woman to represent the 45th District.”
Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested $315,000 in the primary on a digital program and in the mail to educate voters about Katie Porter’s record of standing up for families. Women Vote also contributed $75,000 to House Majority PAC’s independent expenditure effort in the general election.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
