EMILYs List Statement on Wisconsin Senate Nominee Leah Vukmir
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, Wisconsin Republicans nominated Leah Vukmir for U.S. Senate. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Today’s Republican primary was a fight between big special interests spending for candidates to carry their water and enact their agenda, and Leah Vukmir’s Koch Brothers allies won out. Wisconsin voters face a stark choice in November — between Tammy Baldwin, who has fought for Wisconsin and faced millions of dollars in attack ads for standing up for working families, and Leah Vukmir, an anti-choice candidate bought and sold by her special interest backers. From protecting access to health care to fighting against cuts to Social Security and Medicare, Tammy Baldwin is the only candidate who will work for Wisconsin and EMILYs List is proud to support her re-election.”
Leah Vukmir’s record:
- Leah Vukmir has been a leader in ALEC, a Koch Brothers-funded national organization focused on passing a corporate special interest agenda in state legislatures.
- Leah Vukmir also has disparaged SeniorCare, a program that offers prescription drug benefits to assist Wisconsin seniors with costs, and supports Obamacare repeal, which would end protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
- Leah Vukmir supported banning abortion with no exceptions and new restrictions on stem cell research.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
