EMILYs List Endorses Kate Gallego for Mayor of Phoenix
WASHINGTON, D.C. — EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Kate Gallego for mayor of Phoenix, Arizona. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Kate Gallego has the strength and courage to stand up for Arizona’s children and families. On the Phoenix City Council she has championed economic equality, led efforts to prevent sexual harassment, and successfully spoke up and fought back when contractors tried to house migrant children separated from their families in unlicensed, and potentially unsafe, buildings across Phoenix. EMILYs List is confident Kate will continue to defend and strengthen the rights of women and children and we are proud to endorse her campaign for mayor.”
Kate Gallego was elected to the Phoenix City Council in 2013. As city councilwoman she has championed efforts to transform the city’s public transportation system by leading the campaign to pass Proposition 104, which will form the base of a $31.5 billion improvement investment plan. Gallego also led the effort to implement equal pay for equal work by successfully passing Phoenix's equal pay ordinance and spearheaded efforts to end sexual harassment by instituting a standing policy for elected public officials citywide. If elected, she will be the first woman to serve as mayor in more than three decades and be only the second ever elected in Phoenix's history. Gallego would also become the only woman currently leading one of the nation's ten largest cities.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
