EMILYs List Endorses Letitia “Tish” James for Attorney General of New York State
WASHINGTON, D.C. — EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, today announced its endorsement of Letitia “Tish” James for attorney general of New York State. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Tish James is a fierce public advocate who has always had the back of every New Yorker, especially women. She’s ready to serve as the state’s top law enforcement officer and protect consumers, working families, and New York’s most vulnerable. It’s clear that with her proven ability to lead and determination to take on President Trump’s disastrous agenda, Tish is the strongest candidate to defeat Republican Keith Wofford in November. EMILYs List is proud to endorse her.”
Letitia “Tish” James is currently serving her second term as public advocate of New York City. She is the city’s fourth public advocate and assumed the office in 2014. Tish previously served as councilwoman for the 35th District in Brooklyn. As councilwoman, Tish successfully advocated for safer housing conditions and landlord accountability, which led to the passage of the Safe Housing Act and stronger protections for hundreds of tenants. Tish also previously served as the lead of the Brooklyn Regional Office of the New York State Attorney General’s Office where she worked to protect homeowners from predatory lenders.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
