EMILYs List Endorses Kara Eastman in Nebraska's 2nd District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Kara Eastman for Congress in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Kara Eastman is an accomplished champion for Nebraska children and families. As founder and former head of a nonprofit organization, Kara led the way in protecting Nebraskans from environmental hazards in their homes and supporting safe and healthy housing in Omaha. Now, she’s prepared to fight for Nebraska working families in Washington. Kara is committed to protecting and expanding access to quality, affordable health care, investing in education, and increasing economic opportunity for all Nebraskans.
“Kara has proven that she can win the tough fights and has what it takes to flip this seat. Republican Congressman Don Bacon has consistently voted for his party’s disastrous agenda, including to repeal affordable health care access and to cut taxes for the wealthy. Families in the 2nd District deserve someone who will fight for their best interests in Washington, and Kara will be that fighter. The EMILYs List community is proud to stand with Kara and help Democrats take back the House.”
Kara Eastman, who began her career as a social worker, is a problem solver dedicated to serving her community. In 2006, she founded the Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, an organization that has directly served thousands of Nebraska families and raised millions of dollars to support green, safe, and healthy housing in Omaha. In 2014, she was elected to the Board of Governors of Metropolitan Community College, the largest community college in Nebraska, and has served as vice chair. Kara and her husband, a professor, live in Omaha with their daughter.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
