EMILYs List Endorses Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson in Pennsylvania's 10th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson for Congress in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“When Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson sets her mind to something, she doesn't give up. Growing up in a foster house before going to live with her grandparents in York, Shavonnia has deep roots in this community. She was the first in her family to attend college and is driven to put her knowledge to use to serve Pennsylvanians in Congress. Shavonnia most recently served in the Obama administration following a position in Senator Bob Casey’s office, accumulating important government experience along the way.
“Shavonnia is running in a district in Pennsylvania that has become more favorable for Democrats following the redrawing of the Commonwealth's lines. She will take on incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Perry, who voted to rip health care away from millions of Americans and grant corporations big tax breaks on the backs of the middle class. Perry has clearly lost touch with the working families of this community, who deserve an ally in Washington. Shavonnia will be that voice for Pennsylvanians in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to stand with her and her campaign has the full support of our community.”
After growing up in York, Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson attended Georgetown University. She then went on to work for Senator Bob Casey and rise through the ranks at the White House Office of Management and Budget under President Obama. If elected, Shavonnia would be the youngest woman to ever represent Pennsylvania in Congress and the first woman of color to represent the Commonwealth.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
