EMILYs List Endorses Lucy McBath in Georgia's 6th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Lucy McBath for Congress in Georgia's 6th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Lucy McBath is the perfect example of a first-time candidate that EMILYs List is so excited to be supporting in 2018: a hardworking mother who was drawn to social justice advocacy through personal experience and a passion for change. Lucy was a flight attendant for over three decades, but after her son was tragically shot and killed, she turned her lifelong commitment to community activism into a second career.
“Lucy is challenging Representative Karen Handel, who resigned her position as a nonprofit executive in disgrace after attacking Planned Parenthood and is a strong supporter of the destructive Trump-Pence agenda. Handel is a first-term incumbent in a district President Trump carried by less than two points, making this seat a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats in 2018. This race is a must-win on the path to taking back the House, and Lucy has what it takes to win this high-stakes battle. The EMILYs List community looks forward to showing this passionate advocate our full support and standing with Lucy to win this race.”
The daughter of a nurse and the former president of the Illinois branch of the NAACP, Lucy McBath grew up attending rallies and marches for civil rights. After 30 years working as a Delta flight attendant, Lucy has focused her second career on advocating for reforms that will make America safer for all families. In 2012, Lucy’s son Jordan Davis was shot and killed at a gas station in Florida for playing music too loudly in his car. Losing her son to gun violence intensified Lucy’s lifelong commitment to community activism and social justice, and until recently, served as a national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, advocating for gun violence prevention in Washington and state capitols all over America. She is deeply involved in her church and served as a national Faith and Community Outreach Organizer for Everytown/Moms Demand Action.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
