June 13, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Joanna Weiss for election to California’s 47th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“As we look forward to the next election, we know that defending U.S. House seats with a record of strong, Democratic pro-choice leadership will be a critical part of protecting and restoring our freedoms in the coming years. Joanna Weiss is prepared to uphold these values in California’s 47th Congressional District, and her work as a community organizer, lawyer, and advocate for women is unparalleled. While GOP extremists in California and beyond continue their cruel and relentless attack on reproductive health care, we know that Weiss has the experience and fortitude necessary to fight back and truly be a representative for the people, and we are proud to endorse her campaign.”

Joanna Weiss is a community organizer, legal professional and native Southern Californian running to represent the people of California’s 47th Congressional District. Weiss graduated from the University of California – Los Angeles and went on to earn her Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California School of Law. She previously taught courses on civil procedure and public interest lawyering at Chapman University School of Law and served on the board of directors for the Public Law Center for over 10 years. As a lawyer, she provided pro bono legal work for domestic violence survivors, seniors on fixed incomes, and students with special needs. Weiss is the founder and former president of Women for American Values and Ethics (WAVE), which motivates voters and supports candidates for office in order to organize for human, civil and constitutional rights, including reproductive freedom. She is a seasoned organizer and fundraiser who has the passion and experience needed to fight for the needs of Southern Californians in Washington.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
