A hardworking leader poised to fight for Iowa working families
Hard work and determination have defined Theresa Greenfield’s whole life, and now, she’s running to work hard representing Iowans in the U.S. Senate. Theresa was raised on a farm where she and her four siblings would do tasks that were essential to keeping the farm running smoothly, such as baling hay, driving tractors, and feeding animals. Financial aid and multiple part-time jobs enabled Theresa to attend college, studying at Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa State University before ultimately graduating from Minnesota State University. When Theresa was 24 and pregnant with her second son, her first husband Rod was killed at work as a union electric lineman. She began rebuilding her life, working in communities as an urban planner before taking on leadership roles in real estate development companies, including one she now leads as president. Theresa and her husband Steve live in Des Moines and have four grown children, including a son who serves in the U.S. Army.
A champion for expanding economic opportunity
Theresa is running for office to expand economic opportunity for working families in Iowa. One of Theresa’s top priorities is protecting access to affordable health care, Social Security, and other benefits that help Americans make ends meet. After her first husband tragically died, workers’ compensation and Social Security enabled her to return to school and head down a new career path. “They saved my life,” she has said of the benefits. “They helped me restart my life. Those are a hand-up, not a hand-out.” Theresa is also a strong supporter of public education and community colleges, including job training programs. “We need to broaden our scope on what education means, and tools they need to do these jobs,” she has said. With Theresa in office, Iowans will have a senator who empathizes with their experiences and will make sure their voices are heard in Washington, DC.
A critical opportunity to flip a Senate seat and change the balance of power
Theresa is running against Republican Senator Joni Ernst, who has consistently voted against the interests of Iowans she represents. Some of these bad votes include voting to repeal access to affordable health care without a replacement plan, voting against equal pay protections that would ensure women are compensated fairly for their work, and voting to defund Planned Parenthood. Not only would Theresa be a better senator for all Iowans, but flipping this seat in a critical swing state would help strengthen Democrats’ power in the Senate. The EMILY’s List community has the power to help Theresa win this race and we are proud to be standing alongside her in this race.
