A champion for North Country working families
Tedra Cobb is a proven community leader and entrepreneur running for Congress to fight for North Country working families. The daughter of a public school teacher, she grew up in a family with a deep commitment to serving others. When Tedra was in elementary school, her parents started a foster care agency, going on to adopt nine children and welcome many foster children into their family home. She started working in middle school, babysitting and taking on a paper route to save for college. With the help of Pell grants, she earned her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Potsdam. Tedra started a community health agency, securing federal and state funding to provide preventative screening and care to hundreds of hardworking North Country residents who could not afford health insurance. She stepped up to run for office for the first time in 2002 and was elected to the St. Lawrence County Legislature. She served two terms and brought together community leaders, business owners, farmers, educators, tradespeople, and her fellow elected officials to make county government work as hard as the North Country families it serves. After Tedra earned her master’s degree, she started her second business to help North Country businesses, nonprofits, hospitals, and universities achieve their goals. She and her husband have lived in Canton for over 30 years and are proud to have raised their children in the North Country community.
A proven leader fighting to expand economic opportunity
Tedra is running to expand economic opportunity for all North Country working families and to help create good-paying jobs so that communities can thrive. As a grassroots leader dedicated to her community, she will champion policies that move New York State forward for all. At a time when Republicans are desperate to undo the progress we’ve worked so hard to make, Tedra is committed to fighting back and expanding access to quality health care for all — a fight that is deeply personal to her. Her daughter, Aida, had to have emergency back surgery at a young age, and was fortunately covered by their insurance plan and had access to the best doctors and the best hospitals. She stepped up to run for Congress when her community’s elected representative voted to kick millions off of their health insurance, to raise the cost of prescription drugs, and to allow insurance companies to discriminate against those, like Aida, who have pre-existing conditions. Tedra is running to make North Country working families’ voices heard. When elected she will be their fierce champion in Congress.
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Tedra is challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, an extremist whose top priority is advancing a dangerous agenda that hurts the working families she was elected to serve. Tedra ran a strong grassroots campaign that exceeded expectations in 2018, and in 2020, we have the opportunity to help her flip this seat and strengthen our House majority. Stefanik’s deep-pocketed special interest allies will do everything they can to keep this seat, but Tedra has what it takes to turn this seat blue with our help. Let’s show her the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for North Country working families to Congress.
