A proven leader
Sima Ladjevardian is a lawyer, a mother of two, a breast cancer survivor, and a political activist running for Congress to fight for Texas working families. Sima’s family fled political upheaval and revolution in Iran to find security and opportunity in the United States. Through her journey as an immigrant, Sima has seen firsthand the power and promise that America’s freedom can provide hardworking families. Sima is deeply committed to ensuring that all Americans have the same opportunities she was afforded, and she became a leader in bringing communities together across Houston. As a political activist, she has worked to elect candidates up and down the ballot. Sima recently served as a senior advisor and finance chair to Beto O’Rourke during his groundbreaking 2018 U.S. Senate race, and joined his presidential campaign to work towards a more inclusive America. Now she is running for Congress to represent the health care needs of Houston’s families.
A champion for Texas working families
As a breast cancer survivor, health care is a deeply personal issue for Sima. “I believe health care is a human right,” she said, “and I will work to ensure everyone has access to high quality, affordable care.” Sima has what it takes to lead at this pivotal moment in our country’s history. “Now is a time for unity, for bridging divides, and for doing everything necessary to preserve life and liberty,” she said. She has the values and the experience to increase economic opportunity for all. “In Congress, I will work to ensure our economy grows in ways that are fair and sustainable, providing a livable wage and fully supporting Houston’s role as a world leader in renewable energy,” she said. “In Houston, we see a ‘once every 500 years’ flood like Hurricane Harvey almost every year — one of the local consequences of climate change, a global threat that is already having an impact on every Houston family and business.” When elected, she will fight for flood recovery, resilience initiatives, and renewable energy. As an immigrant, Sima knows firsthand the power of a quality education. “My family escaped revolution in Iran to start a new life in America, ultimately building job-creating businesses and lives that embody the American dream,” she said. “Education powered our success.” When elected, Sima will work to give every student the opportunity to succeed. Sima is a fierce advocate for women’s rights to access reproductive health care and to make choices about their own bodies. “The assault on women and women’s health care has reached a fever pitch in Texas and across the country in recent years,” she said. Sima champions policies that give women a fair shot. “We need to close the wage gap that affects all women and women of color in particular, and ensure equal pay for equal work.”
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Sima is challenging Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw, a vulnerable freshman whose record of failure has hurt the working families he was elected to serve. A member of the hardline conservative House Freedom Caucus, Crenshaw has the full support of Donald Trump and deep-pocketed special interests. Crenshaw and Trump can’t take this seat for granted, though: the 2018 U.S. Senate nominee, Beto O'Rourke, lost the district by just a point, and in 2020, we have the opportunity to help Sima win. Texas’ 2nd Congressional District has never before elected a woman to the House, but she is poised to make history as the first. Let’s show Sima the full support of our EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for Texas working families to Congress.
