Katie Hobbs
A courageous leader and defender of democracy
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs ran for governor to bring new leadership to this battleground state that is the site of some of the most dangerous recent attacks on our democracy. Born and raised in Arizona, Gov. Hobbs learned the value of service at an early age from her parents and her church. She has been a professional social worker since 1992, the same year she met her husband at church. They live in Phoenix with their two children and their dog and cats. In 2012, she was elected to the state Senate. And in 2015, she became Senate minority leader. She fought for people all across the state, helping expand Medicaid and providing health care for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans. She worked to secure the rights of victims of sexual and domestic violence, and she worked diligently and with integrity to provide new opportunities in education and job training. She was elected Arizona secretary of state in 2018. She modernized the office, fixed faulty and broken systems, and battled misinformation from foreign and domestic sources. In the face of threats to herself, her family, and her colleagues, she delivered a historically secure election for Arizona voters.
A public servant dedicated to expanding economic opportunity
Gov. Hobbs will focus on addressing the real problems that Arizonans face. She ran “To rebuild our economy after COVID-19 stronger than before,” she has said. “To make life-saving investments in health care. To invest in our schools, our teachers, and the next generation of Arizona’s leaders. To ensure that your race, gender, or zip code do not dictate your destiny.”
A critical victory in a battleground state
Arizona elections have been decided by razor-thin margins in recent years, and we knew Gov. Hobbs, who has been elected statewide, could take back the top office in a state that has flourished under the leadership of Democratic pro-choice women Govs. Rose Mofford and Janet Napolitano. We showed Gov. Hobbs the full support of the EMILY’s List community and helped elect this champion for democracy as Arizona’s next governor.
