An experienced community leader fighting for Missourians
Jill Schupp is an experienced community leader, former teacher and business leader running for Congress to fight for Missouri working families. Jill was raised by hardworking parents in University City, Missouri. Her father and grandfather both worked six days a week at the junk yard in East St. Louis that they started before her father became a Chevrolet salesman, and her mother worked as an audiologist in local schools and doctors’ offices. One of the first in her family to graduate from college, Jill attended the University of Missouri. She went on to earn a teaching certificate from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and taught elementary school before joining an advertising agency where she helped businesses grow. She and her husband, Mark, are the proud parents of two grown children. When Jill learned that students and their teachers were unable to concentrate in their classrooms that lacked air conditioning, she took action. Jill, a determined problem-solver, became involved in the school board and won a seat on it. She quickly established a reputation as a dedicated public servant, and went on to win election to her city council in her community of Creve Coeur and then to the state legislature. In 2014, she flipped a state senate seat — winning a hard-fought election against John R. “Jay” Ashcroft, the son of former Republican senator, governor, and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, in a tough year for Democrats. Now she’s running a strong grassroots campaign to give Missourians a new voice in Congress. “It’s clear that people are tired of business as usual in Washington and are ready for a representative who puts them first,” Jill has said.
A champion for Missouri working families
Jill is running for Congress to expand economic opportunity for all Missouri working families and to be a fierce advocate for her community in Washington. As a former small business executive, she has what it takes to help grow our economy and move Missouri forward for the St. Louis area where she was born and raised and is proud to call home. Jill began her career as a teacher, and she is a passionate leader who has a proven record of fighting for Missouri students and schools. As a state legislator, she has worked to improve daycare safety for the youngest Missourians. Among other honors, she was recognized with the Legislative Champion For Children Award in 2019 and the Missouri Community College Association Distinguished Legislator Award in 2017, and when elected to Congress, she will continue her lifelong fight to expand educational opportunity for all. Jill is committed to expanding all Missourians’ access to quality, affordable health care, and as a state legislator, she has worked to eliminate surprise billing in emergency rooms and help prevent suicide through required training for mental health professionals. Throughout her outstanding career of public service, Jill’s goal has been the same: to craft commonsense solutions to improve the lives of the people she has been elected to represent.
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Jill is challenging Republican Congresswoman Ann Wagner, a four-term incumbent whose record of failure has hurt the working families she was elected to serve. Wagner won re-election by a slim margin in 2018, and in 2020, we have the opportunity to help Jill flip this seat and strengthen our House majority. Former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill carried this district in 2018, and Democrats flipped a state House seat located in the district in a special election last year. Wagner’s deep-pocketed special interest allies will do everything they can to keep this seat, but Jill is running a strong campaign and has what it takes to turn this seat blue with our help. Let’s show Jill the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for Missouri working families to Congress.
