A proven leader fighting for Granite Staters
Jeanne Shaheen is a dedicated champion for Granite Staters who is running for re-election to continue fighting for New Hampshire in Congress. As the first woman in American history to be elected governor and U.S. senator, her commitment to public service is unwavering. The daughter of a shoe manufacturer and a church secretary, Jeanne taught high school and owned a small business before eventually running for New Hampshire state Senate, where she served for four years. She became the state’s first woman governor in 1997 and served three terms. After serving as governor, Jeanne led Harvard University's Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government as its director. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008 and has been a strong voice for Granite State families in Washington since then. Jeanne and her husband live in Madbury and have three daughters and seven grandchildren.
A dedicated champion for working families
Jeanne recalls that her father would tell her that “the best thing you can do for someone is get them a good job,” which has been her guiding principle throughout her time serving in state and federal government. As governor, she helped foster economic growth that enabled Granite State businesses to create thousands of new jobs. “Strengthening New Hampshire’s economy, particularly with a focus on our veterans and our working families, must be our top priority,” she has said. She also values education and access to quality, affordable health care, and has successfully worked to expand access to both during her time as governor and in the U.S. Senate. She has been a leader in the fight against the opioid crisis, introducing and supporting legislation that provides resources for people with substance use disorders. “Battling this crisis is a top priority for me, and I’ll continue to reach across the aisle to advance measures in Congress that will build on the progress made,” she has said.
A crucial hold in a must-win swing state
Jeanne has run strong campaigns and won tough battles before, and she needs our full support in 2020. We cannot take our eyes off the ball – New Hampshire remains a critical swing state for offices up and down the ballot. There is no doubt this race will be a top target for Republicans trying to pick up a seat in the Senate. EMILY’s List is proud to stand alongside Jeanne as she runs for a well-deserved third term to continue fighting for Granite Staters.
