A proven leader
Chris Bubser is a mom, an engineer, a health care professional, and a conservationist running to fight for the working families of California's 8th Congressional District. Born in Pennsylvania coal country as the youngest of three, Chris was raised in a working-class family. She learned the value of hard work from her father, who worked on military technology; her mother, who was a substitute teacher; and her close uncle, who served overseas in World War II. Chris got her first job at 14 years old, and she waited tables while she earned a degree in industrial engineering from Lehigh University. Chris moved to California and earned an MBA at UCLA, and she went on to work for a start-up medical device company and then worked in the biotechnology field. For two decades, Chris helped launch groundbreaking treatments that extended the lives of patients with HIV and cancer. Chris has lived in California for nearly 30 years and in Mammoth Lakes for more than 13, and she has been married to her husband David for 20 years. They have two teenage children and share their lives with two dogs and a cat. Chris and her husband are lovers of the outdoors and active with Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, helping host military families for activities in the mountains. Chris, a first-time candidate, never expected to run for office, but when she saw how the people of her community were being denied responsive representation in Congress, she answered the call.
A champion for California working families
Chris is running for Congress to expand economic opportunity for all. When elected, she will work tirelessly to bring clean industry and sustainable energy jobs to her community, and she will work to expand local educational opportunities in order to teach tomorrow’s workers vitally needed skilled trades and technical jobs. Chris is also dedicated to expanding access to health care, a deeply personal issue for her and her family. Chris understands the challenges of the health care system from both her professional experiences and as the mother of a daughter with epilepsy. Chris has fought insurance companies to cover her daughter’s preexisting condition, taken time away from work to manage her father’s care, and has seen too many friends drain their finances to pay for medicine to treat chronic and life-threatening health conditions. Chris is dedicated to protecting rural hospitals, community health centers, and trauma centers, and expanding home care options for seniors and others who need it.
An opportunity to flip an open seat from red to blue
Chris is running for the open seat currently held by Republican Congressman Paul Cook, who declined to run for reelection to the House in 2020 in order to seek county office. She is now facing Republican State Assemblyman Jay Obernolte, a Trump-endorsed extremist. The rapidly-changing, diverse 8th District stretches along much of California’s eastern border, and includes parts of San Bernardino County, and all of Inyo and Mono counties. The district includes, among others, the communities of Adelanto, Apple Valley, Barstow, Bishop, Calimesa, Hesperia, Highland, Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes, Needles, Trona, Twentynine Palms, Victorville, Yucaipa, Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks. Chris has what it takes to win with our help, so let’s show her the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for California working families to Congress.
