An experienced medical doctor and dedicated public servant
Dr. Barbara Bollier is an experienced medical doctor and dedicated public servant fighting for Kansas working families. The daughter of a doctor and nurse, Barbara grew up in Fairway and Mission Hills where she attended Kansas public schools. She graduated from the University of Kansas and went on to earn a medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Barbara and her husband met and married while in medical school, and after completing their residencies, they returned to Kansas, where she joined her father in his anesthesia practice at Surgicenter of Kansas City. Her medical background led to several years of volunteer work with the Center for Practical Bioethics and she also taught in the Bioethics Master’s program at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Barbara has served on the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Board as chair of the grants committee, as a volunteer at Ruston Elementary School and Pembroke Hill School, and as a panel speaker with the Johnson County STOP Underage Drinking Coalition. She is active in her church community, and has served as an elder, a respite caregiver, and has taught sex education classes. Barbara ran for the Kansas House in 2009 to make a difference for her community on a broader level and served three terms before going on to win election to the state Senate in 2016. Barbara has served as an independent voice for Kansans, and in 2018, she joined the Democratic Party to stand up to the extreme conservative political agenda that goes against her Kansas values. She and her husband live in Mission Hills and are the proud parents of two grown children.
A courageous leader fighting for Kansas working families
Barbara is running for U.S. Senate to expand economic opportunity for Kansas working families. She is a champion for public education and access to affordable health care, and she partnered with then-state Senator Laura Kelly to build the bipartisan coalition that ultimately ended former Governor Sam Brownback’s failed tax experiment that hurt hardworking Kansans. Barbara is a leading voice of support for expanding Medicaid in Kansas and a fierce advocate for rural hospitals. She currently serves on the 2019 Special Committee on Medicaid Expansion. As a medical doctor, Barbara is a powerful defender of a woman’s right to make their own health care decisions.
A must-win opportunity to flip a Senate seat
Barbara is running for the open U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring incumbent Republican Senator Pat Roberts. A crowded field of Republicans are vying for the seat, including dangerous extremist former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Her campaign has quickly gained strong grassroots support as well as endorsements from outstanding leaders such as former Kansas Governor and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. The EMILY’s List community has the power to help Barbara win, and we are proud to stand alongside her. Kansas has never before elected a Democratic woman to serve in the Senate, and Barbara has what it takes to make history as the first. Let’s show this champion for Kansas working families our full support to help her flip this seat from red to blue — and let’s take back the Senate.
