A proven leader in agriculture and education
Audrey is a proven leader in agriculture and education running for congress to fight for North State working families. Audrey spent her childhood on her family’s farm and ranch in central California. Her father was a Vietnam veteran and her mother was a leader in their church, and her family grew hay and wine grapes and raised beef cattle and draft horses. Audrey grew up learning the importance of a strong work ethic and respect for land and natural resources. From an early age, Audrey was active in 4-H and other service learning organizations. She was particularly involved in the Future Farmers of America and served as a California FFA state officer. Audrey worked her way through college in the food and beverage industry in service, management, and consultative positions. She earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in agricultural education from California State University, Chico, and her master’s thesis was recognized with an award as the best education thesis in the California State University system that year. Audrey taught agriculture at California State University, Chico for almost six years, and went on to spend a year as a volunteer working with rural youth on agriculture projects in El Salvador and another year working for a nonprofit doing agricultural education work in West Africa while living in Ghana. Today, Audrey designs learning strategy and curriculum for worldwide agricultural companies and nonprofits, like the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and the World Bank.
A champion for California’s North State working families
Audrey is running to expand economic opportunity for the hardworking families of the North State. As a leader in education and agriculture, she has what it takes to increase job readiness and workforce development and to support small businesses and elevate the North State as a place for businesses to start and grow. Audrey is a fierce advocate for expanding access to health care, an issue that is deeply personal to her. In 2018, after five months of campaigning, Audrey’s doctor diagnosed a football-sized tumor in her ovary and she underwent emergency abdominal surgery. She was campaigning full time, taking a leave of absence from her job as an educator, and almost let her insurance lapse. “Two thirds of bankruptcies in this country are related to a medical crisis—and I was almost one of them,” she has said. In Audrey’s medically-underserved rural community, residents often have to travel for hours or across state lines to seek medical care, and Audrey had to travel to Eugene, Oregon to find a surgeon capable of performing the life-saving procedure without a months-long waiting period. “In two [of our] counties, women can’t deliver their babies in hospitals because health care facilities are underfunded and understaffed,” she has said. When elected, Audrey, now fully recovered, will fight tirelessly to improve access to affordable, quality rural health care. “Changes in climate as well as lack of appropriate policy action have led to devastating losses to life, property, and our local economy in California’s 1st District,” she has said, and historic wildfires have devastated her community. “My policy priorities for combating climate change and developing our rural economy focus on three critical approaches: mitigation, adaptation and resilience.”
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Audrey is challenging Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa, an extremist who voted for the House Republican health care plan to kick 23 million people off their insurance, repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood, and voted to undermine equal pay protections for women. Audrey ran for this seat in 2018 as a first-time candidate, and her hardworking grassroots campaign forced LaMalfa into one of the first competitive races of his political career. Equipped with more experience and with even more determination, Audrey has what it takes to win with our help. Let’s show Audrey the full support of our EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for North State working families to Congress.
