A first generation American fighting for Maryland’s working families
Aruna Miller is running for Congress to fight for Maryland’s working families. She came to the United States from India when she was seven years old, the last member of her family to join her father after he emigrated seeking the American dream and worked hard to save enough money for Aruna’s mother and siblings to join him one by one. She attended public schools and quickly learned English. When Aruna was in high school, her father went through a health crisis and lost his job. She found work in a fast food restaurant to help make ends meet, and with the help of Pell grants and student loans Aruna worked her way through college and became a civil engineer. Grateful for the opportunities America gave her, Aruna dedicated her career to public service and worked as a transportation engineer for Montgomery County and other local governments. As she and her husband raised their three daughters, she began volunteering in their community to give back and to engage and empower others. In 2010, Aruna was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, where she has been a powerful advocate for increasing educational and economic opportunity for all Marylanders. She will continue to fight determinedly on their behalf in Congress.
A tireless champion and innovative problem solver
As an engineer, Aruna is focused on identifying the toughest challenges facing Maryland’s working families — and fighting for the solutions that can have the greatest positive impact on their lives. She currently serves on the board of The Montgomery County Public Schools Educational Foundation; and in the legislature, she is a champion for strong public schools that prepare students for tomorrow’s economy. She has collaborated with academic and business leaders to invest in STEM education, help small businesses grow, and bring good paying jobs to Maryland. Aruna has fought to invest in infrastructure to increase Marylanders’ access to their communities and jobs, and to grow the state’s economy. She is an advocate for sustainability, and uses her STEM background to fight back against the dangerous anti-science agenda that threatens our environment and our future. She is committed to expanding all Americans’ access to quality health care, and fiercely defends every woman’s right to make her own choices about her reproductive health. “My past, present, and future have culminated into one purpose – to give the best of myself every day to champion the needs of other people in the community,” Aruna has said.
An open seat and an opportunity to elect a leader who knows how to win
Aruna is running in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District to represent the community where she has worked, raised her family, and sent her daughters to public schools. This is an open seat vacated by Democratic Congressman John Delaney, and an outstanding opportunity to elect an inspiring new leader to represent this diverse district at a time when Washington needs her perspective more than ever. Aruna faces a crowded primary field, including opponents with the ability to spend tens of millions of dollars of their personal fortunes to fund their own campaigns — but her record of service, dedication to the working families of her community, and tireless work make her a formidable candidate. Her strong campaign quickly built momentum in the community she will always put first. Although currently held by a Democrat, this is the least reliably Democratic congressional district in Maryland and a must-win seat in our efforts to take back the House. Additionally, there are no women in Maryland's federal delegation, and this is our best chance to ensure that a woman has a seat at the table. Aruna has what it takes to win, and with the full support of the EMILY’s List community, she will take her fight for working families all the way to Congress. Let’s all chip in and show her that she can count on us to have her back as she fights for our progressive values.
