Angie Craig
A champion for Minnesota’s working families
Rep. Angie Craig ran for reelection to Congress because the opportunities she was lucky enough to have are disappearing for too many working families. Rep. Craig grew up in a mobile home park, one of three kids raised by a single mom who worked while going to school to earn her college degree. Rep. Craig’s mom taught her that if she worked hard, she could grow up to be anything she wanted to be. Rep. Craig worked two jobs to keep up with the cost of her education, and graduated from a state college. She began her career as a newspaper reporter then worked her way up in business over 15 years to eventually lead a workforce of 16,000 employees for a major Minnesota manufacturer. As a former Fortune 500 company executive, she helped create jobs, empowered women and veterans to advance in their careers, and created workplace policies to promote diversity and inclusion. In 2000, her fight for custody of her adopted son led to a landmark ruling making it possible for other LGBTQ+ couples to adopt. As a leader in the Minnesota business community, Rep. Craig has been a powerful advocate for marriage equality in the state. Our country had never before had an openly lesbian mother in the House, and Rep. Craig’s 2018 victory gave LGBTQ+ families a new voice in the halls of power. She and her wife are proud to have raised their four sons in Minnesota and embrace the state’s values of family, community, and caring for each other — values Rep. Craig is proud to bring to Congress.
A business leader fighting to expand economic opportunity
Rep. Craig is deeply committed to expanding economic opportunity for all Minnesotans, improving access to health care, and making education affordable. She worked tirelessly to help pass legislation to jumpstart our economic recovery, deliver immediate relief to American families, and finally turn the tide in our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. She used her experience in health care management to advocate for frontline workers in her state facing PPE shortages, and she co-founded the Congressional Supply Chain Caucus to build a reliable, high-quality, resilient supply chain with accountability at the federal level. When Rep. Craig was growing up, her family didn’t always have health insurance, and that experience makes her unwavering in her commitment to further expanding access to affordable quality health care for all. She helped pass the Equality Act, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that expands the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other existing statutes to extend non-discrimination protections to the LGBTQ+ community. “As a young lesbian woman growing up in rural America, I never imagined I’d finally see a bill like this reach the House floor – much less as a member of this body,” she has said. “Those of us who are fortunate enough to serve our country in Congress have a responsibility to pass bills like the Equality Act to ensure that all of our constituents have equal protection under the law. Because when we outlaw discrimination and harassment against some, the benefits are shared by all of us – and our communities are stronger.” We need her experience and perspective in Congress now more than ever.
Victory in a must-win reelection fight
Rep. Craig was elected to represent this true purple district in 2018, and faced a tough fight and won reelection in 2020, and once again in 2022. With so much of our progress at stake, we showed Rep. Craig the full support of the EMILY’s List community and helped keep this champion for Minnesota working families in the House.
