An experienced community and education leader
Alyse Galvin is a community and education leader running for Congress to fight for Alaska working families. A third-generation Alaskan, Alyse grew up in a home with trauma and abuse. Determined to break the cycle and to become the first in her family to earn a degree, Alyse beat tough odds with the support of her community and caring teachers. Alyse and her husband returned to Alaska to start their family and are the proud parents of four children. She has owned two small businesses, managed a large hotel, and worked to expand early childhood education for Alaskan kids at the public-private partnership Best Beginnings. Alyse went on to serve Alaskans under the leadership of two governors to improve the state’s public schools. In 2014, frustrated by years of education underfunding and facing renewed threats to public schools, Alyse led a small group of parents to resist new budget cuts. Great Alaska Schools grew into a grassroots force of over 4,000 across the state and succeeded in restoring funding and improving public education. Alyse stepped up to run for Congress in 2018, and as a first time candidate, she came closer to winning this red seat than anyone had in nearly 30 years. Now she is back to finish the job, and she has what it takes to win.
A champion for Alaska working families
“I want to make sure that Alaska is a place with the jobs, educational opportunities, and vibrant communities that will allow my children — and every child — to live, work and raise families right here in Alaska, too,” Alyse has said. She is a fierce advocate for expanding access to quality health care, an issue that is deeply personal to her and her family. “When I was pregnant with my second child, Sean, I stayed up at night worried that any complication would have meant bankruptcy for my family,” Alyse has said. “No Alaskan should have to go through what we did.” Alyse, an experienced problem solver and proven leader, is running to bring Alaska’s needs and Alaska’s values to Washington.
An opportunity to make history
Alyse is challenging incumbent Republican Congressman Don Young, an extremist in his 24th term as Alaska’s single at-large representative in the House. Young has voted for the House Republican plan to kick 23 million people off their insurance, repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood, and supported overturning Roe v. Wade. Alaska has never before elected a woman representative to the House, but Alyse is poised to make history as the first. Deep-pocketed Republican special interests are sure to do everything they can to hold on to this seat, but Alyse, a seasoned grassroots organizer, has what it takes to fight back and win. Let’s show Alyse the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for Alaska working families to Congress.
