Abigail Spanberger
A champion for all Virginians
Rep. Abigail Spanberger is an experienced leader currently serving her third term in Congress as the representative of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. EMILYs List first endorsed Spanberger when she flipped the district blue in 2018 and has endorsed her every cycle since. Spanberger grew up in Henrico County, Virginia, and is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia. She began her career of public service as a federal law enforcement officer working narcotics and money laundering cases with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Following her love of country, public service, and languages, she went on to join the CIA as a case officer and worked undercover collecting intelligence, managing assets, and overseeing high-profile programs to combat terrorism and keep Americans safe. Spanberger spent several years in the private sector before deciding to run for Congress, when she saw partisan politics and division threatening the country she dedicated her life to defend. She and her husband are parents to three daughters.
A fighter working to protect choice and democracy
Spanberger has served on both the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and House Agriculture Committee, focusing on strengthening our country’s national security and fighting for Virginia families by lowering costs and creating jobs. If elected governor, she’s said her priorities will be protecting Virginians’ right to choose and solving the problems that affect them most. “Our country and our Commonwealth are facing fundamental threats to our rights, our freedoms, and to our democracy,” Spanberger stated. “While some politicians in Richmond focus on banning abortion and books, what they’re not doing is helping people.”
A must-flip office that could change Virginians’ lives
Term-limited Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has led Virginia down the wrong path since being elected in 2021, collaborating with the state’s radical GOP extremists to attempt to roll back reproductive rights, restrict public education, harm LGBTQ+ Virginians, and promote election denial conspiracy theories. We can be sure that whoever the Republicans nominate to run for governor will follow in his backward footsteps, but Virginians spoke loud and clear in the most recent election: they want reproductive health care protected in the state, and Spanberger is the woman for the job. If elected, Spanberger would also be the first woman governor in Virginia’s history. With so much of our progress at stake, let’s show Spanberger the full support of the EMILYs List community and help this champion for Virginians take her groundbreaking fight to the governor’s office.
