A groundbreaker for Delaware

Sarah McBride is the current state senator for Delaware’s 1st Senate District, where she has been serving since being elected in 2020 with the full support of EMILYs List. She made history as the first openly transgender state senator in the country. In the state Senate, McBride has worked successfully to pass legislation expanding health care access, improving public education, and providing paid family and medical leave. Prior to serving in the state Senate, McBride was the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and a leading activist in the effort to pass non-discrimination protections in Delaware. She has also previously taught public policy at the University of Delaware and authored a 2018 memoir, “Tomorrow Will Be Different,” for which President Joe Biden wrote the foreword. McBride is a graduate of Cab Calloway School of the Arts and American University, and a proud aunt of seven.

A champion for reproductive freedom

McBride has always been a strong supporter of ensuring access to quality, affordable health care, a commitment that deepened after watching her late husband, Andy, battle cancer. She is also focused on advancing criminal justice reform, reducing gun violence, and tackling the crisis of climate change head-on. McBride is a steadfast supporter of reproductive freedom and will work in the U.S. House to pass federal legislation protecting the right to choose. “I’ve never wavered in the fight to protect the right to an abortion, and I never will,” she has said. “Abortion care is health care. It’s time we treated it as such by making it available and accessible for all who seek it.”

A chance to make history

Delaware’s At-Large Congressional seat is being vacated by pro-choice champion Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, who is running to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate with the support of EMILYs List. Delaware’s at-large seat has been represented by pro-choice Democrats for over 10 years, and McBride will make sure to continue that legacy and fight for our freedoms in the U.S. House. If elected, McBride would be the first openly transgender member of Congress in either chamber. Let’s show her the full support of the EMILYs List community and help her make history and change the future.
